What the hell happened to The O.C.?

It's as though the entire writing and producing staff was summarily fired and replaced by people who had never seen the show (thanks to J Lo for pointing out -- and laughing with me at -- some of these). To wit:

Summer is the sluttiest, most popular girl in school.	Summer is a lonely loser whose only friends are Marissa, Anna and Seth.
Marissa is a little dim, makes bad choices and has a younger sister.	Well, she’s still dim, and still makes bad choices, but her sister has joined the ranks of the disappeared.
Seth loves Ryan with a brotherly passion and is constantly trying to get closer to him.	Seth is so-so about Ryan, and inexplicably doesn’t believe Oliver is creepy, despite his “I’m creepy” haircut.
Luke is a frat-boy-in-training jerk who is really angry when Ryan steals Marissa from him.	Luke is a really, really nice guy with a gay dad, and he’ll do anything to help out Ryan.
Kirsten’s father is a hulking, angry corporate dictator who loves nothing more than telling Sandy what a bad husband and provider he is.	Kirsten’s father is too much of a pussy to break up with his girlfriend.
Kirsten’s hair is straight.	Kirsten’s hair is permed.  Now wait, it’s straight again.  Oh!  Permed.  No, no, it’s straight.
